What is the Cycle of Avoidance and How Can You Break It?


We all avoid temptation. We avoid people, places, and situations we don’t like because, for some reason, these things irritate us or cause us pain. We can reduce our stress naturally and healthily by avoiding situations, people, and places that we don’t like.

People don’t like stress. It makes sense to apply self-protective measures to avoid situations we find stressful or painful. Although it seems reasonable to try to avoid stress and maintain control, it can cause more harm than good.

As a coping mechanism, avoidance behavior can help you to be more empowered. This gives you a false sense that you have control. It makes you feel good in the moment. However, it does not solve problems.

It can also lead to harmful coping mechanisms like substance abuse and isolation. This can lead to a vicious circle of avoidance, which increases stress and causes and reinforces anxiety and depressive symptoms.[1]

The Cycle of Avoidance

Avoidance behaviors can lead to self-destructive behavior if they are used to avoid or distract from difficult thoughts, feelings and situations. We avoid the pain that we have to face and the actions we need to take to end the avoidant behavior.

Avoidance is used by people to deal with pain, trauma, or other mental health issues
