1. The search for a House Speaker intensifies in the face of war in Israel

House Republicans must quickly agree on who will succeed Kevin McCarthy, given the unexpected escalation of violence between Hamas & Israel. Before the House can approve emergency military aid to Israel, a new speaker needs to be appointed. Congress must also pass a new budget by mid-November to avoid a shutdown.

After a closed door vote on Wednesday, it is expected that Louisiana Republican Steve Scalise will fill the position. His election won’t be official until a majority of members in the full House of Representatives — at least 217 — votes for him.

2. Israeli airstrikes kill more than 1,000 civilians on Gaza

Gaza Ministry of Health reported Wednesday that Israel has carried out retaliatory strikes in Gaza Strip, killing at least 1100 people including 326 kids. At least 5,339 people were injured in the blockaded Palestinian territories.

UNRWA, the United Nations’ Palestine Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, said in a statement.
