1. The government shutdown could be coming again

Mike Johnson, the newly appointed Speaker of the House has just nine days to pass the appropriation bill and avoid a shutdown.

Republicans have pushed for IRS budget cuts and funding for border security between the U.S. and Mexico as a reward for Democrats’ approval of proposed aid for Ukraine and Israel. Biden requested $61 billion for Ukraine, and $14.3 billion for Israel. Senate Democrats rejected the funding passed by Republicans in the House for Israel only.

2. Syphilis cases are increasing among infants

Over 3,700 newborns tested positive for congenital syphilis in 2022, according to the CDC, which described the development as “alarming” while calling for increased testing for expecting mothers and their babies. The increase is the highest rate in 30 year, with 10x more babies being born with congenital syphilis in 2022 than in 2012.
