1. Israel declares war against Hamas following deadly attack
Israel vowed to take “mighty revenge” after Hamas attacks over the weekend killed 900 people — most civilians. On Monday, the Israeli military announced that it had imposed a complete blockade on Gaza and called up 360,000 reservists. This move could be interpreted as a warning that a ground attack is being planned.
Israel has been launching airstrikes on the Gaza Strip since Saturday’s attacks. These are the most destructive bombings in 75 years of war. Gaza officials report that almost 700 Palestinians are dead, and that entire districts have been destroyed.
