1. Israel intensifies invasion as thousands of Palestinians flee to the south
Israel’s retaliatory ground invasion and airstrikes have forced thousands of Palestinians from their homes in the northern Gaza Strip.
The United Nations reported that 2,000 people fled on Sunday. This number jumped dramatically to 15,000 by Tuesday. Israel reported that over 50,000 Palestinians traveled through an evacuation route on Wednesday. This was only the fifth time in a week that the Israeli army has allowed civilians to leave.
The mass evacuations have been likened to a second “Nakba” — “catastrophe” in Arabic — referencing the violent displacement of Palestinians in 1948 from territories now known as Israel.
