'The Holly' Documentary Creators Open Up About Police Brutality and Corruption in Denver



A powerful new film shines the light on police corruption in Denver’s Black community and gentrification.


The Holly Follows the story of Terrance Robers, an activist and former gang member who spent time in jail for gang-related crimes. Roberts was charged with shooting a former member of a gang at a peaceful rally in 2013, attracting national media attention.

Director Julian Rubinstein was born and raised in Denver. He returned to the city to research the case and history. He tells Sonia Baghdady Advocate Now He “felt like he was in the middle of a crime, and not just reporting a crime which had already happened.”

Rubinstein says, “It felt like riding a horse for a little while.” “I realized right away that there was a different story in the community than what the media was presenting and broadcasting. It was covered extensively. It was a part of the initial effort to uncover the truth and tell an alternative story.
