1. The government shutdown is looming with no end in site

The government shuts down at the end the month if Congress does not reach an agreement within 13 days.

House Republicans announced a temporary measure Sunday. It includes an 8 percent cut for the majority of federal agencies and stricter border controls. The proposal did not include funding for Ukraine or disaster relief. The bill is unlikely to pass as several Republicans will vote in agreement with Democrats to oppose it.

2. Dreamers uncertain after federal judge rules DACA unlawful

A federal court judge declared on Wednesday that the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals program (DACA) is illegal.

Judge Andrew Hanen of U.S. District Court for Southern District of Texas decided that the Biden Administration was not allowed to codify DACA into federal regulations, but did not order the repeal of protections against deportation and work permits for more than half a million “Dreamers.”
