Conservationists warn of the pollution that plastics cause in the oceans.


Recent research has shown that over 171 trillion pieces of plastic are in the oceans around the world, with most being “microplastics.” Microplastics are 5mm particles or smaller, which cause pollution when they enter natural ecosystems. They can come from cosmetics, clothing and food packaging.

Anja Brandon, Associate Director of U.S. Plastics Policy for Ocean Conservancy, says: “Microplastics, because of their size and shape, are available to all food webs.” These microplastics are lodged in the tissues, gills, and guts of marine animals. They pose a threat to the entire food-web.

Ocean Conservancy is a group of environmental activists that promotes healthy ocean ecosystems and prevents marine pollution. They also advocate against practices that endanger ocean life and human lives. The nonprofit has as one of its main missions to eliminate plastic pollution.
