1. FDA approves cure of sickle cell disease

Food and Drug Administration approved on Friday a revolutionary treatment for sickle-cell disease, an illness that is devastating to Black people. The therapy, called Casgevy, works by genetically modifying a patient’s stem cells.

The only known cure until now for sickle cell was a donor bone marrow transfusion, but it was not a guaranteed success. In addition to the difficulty in finding a suitable donor, the transplant also comes with the risk of the immune system rejecting it.

2. Republicans and Democrats clash about border security

Congress is at a deadlock over a spending bill. Amidst clashes about how to supply Ukraine and Israel as well as the southern border, no funding will be given until lawmakers reach an agreement.

As a large number migrants try to cross the southern border of the United States, several states report recovering an increasing amount of bodies of those who died during their journey. A key entry point in Arizona was closed to combat illegal immigration.
