1. Congress in chaos since McCarthy’s historic dismissal
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy made history this week – though likely not in the way he wants. After conservative Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz submitted a motion for McCarthy to be removed as Speaker of House, the House of Representatives voted to oust him on Tuesday.
The first time ever a House speaker has been removed through a vote. Patrick T. McHenry is the current acting speaker. He’s a Republican from North Carolina who can only adjourn and recess House.
2. Kaiser Permanente strike: Some tentative agreements reached
Over 75,000 Kaiser Permanente employees walked out on Wednesday, starting a strike against America’s largest nonprofit health care organization. The strike only has a three-day duration, from October 7 to 10.
The striking workers are vocational nurses, emergency room technicians, radiology techs, X-ray techs, respiratory therapists and pharmacists.
