Design boring and sad: the new norm


First thing I saw when I woke up this morning was a link from a reader: “HGTV is making our homes boring and us sad” and I gave a big fat HALLELUJA and an enthusiastic AMEN! To be honest, I’m wondering why there haven’t been more articles or reaction to it (and if there have been, send them my way!). Were we not thinking about it? Are we not all thinking it?

These photos were taken in our rental apartment, before we moved into the home of our present. Everything was beige before we moved in and we painted everything white because that was something that I knew our landlords would be fine with and would “add value” to their space.

Yes, these are trends and have, like they have in the past, shifted slowly but surely into a never ending hamster wheel of keeping up with the Joneses, or perhaps more accurately phrased “does it have resale value?”. But that’s just it–they are trends, intended to “inspire”, sell, gain viewers/audience, please advertisers, move faster, be more efficient. It’s a business model and it works!
